Is Window Film Durable?

One of the most common inquiries we get here at Dallas Window Film is on how long window tinting will stay on windows. In other words–how durable is it. This information is important especially to those trying to properly calculate a potential ROI. In all actuality window film is a very durable product. One that will likely last more than 10 years depending on some factors that influence the duration of window film on windows.

Factors That Influence the Life of Window Film

  1. The Location of the Film: Window film works well against intense sun exposure–for years. But one should understand that in hot climates, like Dallas, or on windows facing east or west –the film will wear down quicker. These windows on your home will likely need window tinting replacement before others. But one must remember, the windows that need film are the exact ones that get the most sun and therefore ones that need the film the most. Making them the ones that will earn you the most ROI in energy-savings.
  2. The Quality of the Film: When it comes to solar films, polyester films are very cost-effective and work relatively well. The trade-off for these films is that they are also not nearly as resistant to scratches as more expensive films and won’t last as long. Ceramic window films are some of the highest-quality window tints and very durable. This is why they are more expensive and resistant to scratches and damage. Nearly every window film at a higher price point will be of better quality. Most likely, the more you spend per foot–the longer lifespan and/or warranty.
  3.  The Skill of the Installer: Window tinting is something you could DIY on your Dallas home windows. Be warned– doing this will likely result in a shorter lifespan and a lot of work for you. This process almost always nulls the warranty too. So, in the long run, by doing it yourself you risk potentially expensive consequences. By hiring a true professional (one that is approved by the window film brand manufacturer) you ensure the correct adhesion and a flawless look. Plus, you will likely get two warranties–installer and manufacturer.
